Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD)

Our dental school provides you with a top-notch dental education, delivered through an innovative curriculum and advanced technology. Located at the LMU-CDM site in Knoxville at the newly renovated LMU Tower, the DMD degree program gives you the opportunity to learn in our exceptional, state-of-the-art facilities. These include a full simulation lab, a bench lab, a digital workflow lab, and a wet/dry lab. Even better, you'll get experience working in a professional dental office environment, tending to real patients, in the LMU-CDM CRET Innovation Center, a private practice dental office with treatment rooms, a dental laboratory, a sterilization area, a reception desk and record-keeping space, along with all the technology and tools associated with a modern dental practice. You'll also work with patients and the public in mobile dentistry units and at standalone clinics in our community. Admission Requirements

Review the details below to ensure that you are eligible for admission to the DMD degree program! 

  1. A completed LMU College of Dental Medicine Application for Admissions
  2. Participation in an interview with the LMU-CDM Admissions Committee (on the LMU campus)
  3. A 1000-word essay detailing how and why you decided to pursue a career as a dentist
  4. Two letters of reference (from non-relatives) detailing your character, leadership skills and service to the community
  5. An overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.3. You must also maintain a minimum 3.3 average in science
  6. courses and at least a 3.2 in non-science courses.
  7. A score of 19 or better on the Dental Admissions Test (DAT)
  8. Completed at least 60 observation/shadowing hours in a general dentist’s office

In addition to these requirements, you must have completed the following undergraduate courses to qualify for this graduate-level program.

Required Undergraduate Courses

  1. General Biology: 8 semester hours (including lecture and lab)
  2. Inorganic (General) Chemistry: 8 semester hours (including lecture and lab)
  3. Organic Chemistry: 8 semester hours (including lecture and lab)
  4. Physics: 8 semester hours (including lecture and lab)
  5. English: 8 semester hours

Recommended Undergraduate Courses

  1. Anatomy and Physiology: 4 semester hours
  2. Biochemistry: 4 semester hours
  3. Cellular & Molecular Biology: 4 semester hours
  4. Histology: 4 semester hours

Note: Labs are required in all science prerequisites unless otherwise noted.

How to Apply

For admission to the DMD program, you must apply through both the LMU portal and the ADEA application portal. Both applications MUST be completed for entry to the program. We recommend completing both applications the summer before the last year of your undergraduate education.

Outcomes

Similar to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, your DMD degree readies you to begin practicing as a fully accredited dentist. With it, you can go to work at an established dental practice or you can begin your own. Dentists are always in high demand: according to 2021 reports, practicing dentists make a median salary of $160,370. The highest paid make on average about $208,000 a year, while the lowest paid make about $101,570.
